Captain Eric West started his boating career in 1948 when his family moved aboard a 42' Motoryacht near Lake Erie. In 1955 he owned his first sailboat and in 1959, his first powerboat. While in college, in the early 60's, he sailed small boats and canoes at FSU. In 1972 he bought a Morgan 22 which he raced and cruised in the Gulf of Mexico, south of Tallahassee. In 1976 he bought an Alberg 30 sloop which he lived aboard for 7 years and cruised the Cheasapeke Bay and eventually to Florida.

During the 80's, he raced sailboats mostly for others, although he occasionally raced his own boat. These races took his as far as Bermuda, though most were around-the-buoy races and overnighters. At the same time, he delivered boats as far as Newport Rhode Island, via Bermuda, and back to Key Largo on the East Coast and as far north as northern Lake Champlain. He briefly operated a 37' sailboat in charter in the mid 80's also.

In the late 80's and into late 2002, he was a yacht broker which gave him experience on around 400 boats, both power and sail, doing pre-purchase sea trials. He also had the opportunity to sail several times from the West Coast of Florida and the keys to Daytona and to sail from Daytona to points as far away as Georgetown, SC.

During this time he continued racing both his own boat and for others, including three races from Daytona to Charleston, SC. His present boat was purchased in 1996 and he has been chartering on a part-time basis until the fall of 2002 when he closed his brokerage and started full-time chartering, teaching, delivering, consulting and operating boats for owners who cannot attend their own surveys. Additionally, he still races with friends in the Halifax River Yacht Club annual series and other races.
